Corning, NY - Runners in the 3rd Annual Wineglass Half Marathon on Oct. 6 will not be able to drive to and park at the start line at Campbell-Savona High School this year. Race officials announced the change as necessary to ensure the safety of runners, drivers and spectators for this year's record field.
"We've had a course safety team of law enforcement and municipalities along the route engaged all year to make sure that we're prepared for the increase in runners," said Sheila Sutton, Race Co-Director. "This change is an important part of that."
Runners in the 13.1 mile race will be offered three options for getting to the start line:
- Parking in downtown Corning and taking a free shuttle bus to Campbell-Savona high school from 5:30-7:00AM.
- Parking at Philips Lighting in Bath and taking a free shuttle to the high school.
- Being dropped off by a friend at the corner of Main St. and Horton Ln. near the high school.
According to Sutton, most large races cannot accommodate runners' cars at the start lines, so the bus shuttles are a common feature. "We want to get the word out about this change so it doesn't add stress to runners who may already be nervous about the race that morning."
Those wishing to view the start of the half marathon after dropping off a runner can proceed to the Campbell Legion field where there are parking and viewing areas.
Joe McUmber of the Campbell Fire Department said the department will have volunteers at intersections along and around Main Street to direct traffic and ensure the change is implemented smoothly. "We'll be ready," said McUmber.
There will be no change for the full marathon. Runners can take shuttles from Corning to Philips Lighting in Bath from 5:30-7:00AM or can park their cars in the Philips Lighting and walk or take a bus ¼ mile to the start line on Mount Washington Rd (CR 133). Free shuttles will return to Philips every half hour from 11:00AM-2:00PM for runners to retrieve their cars.
Almost 5,000 runners from 41 states and 5 countries are registered for the Sunday, October 6th races.
