Corning, NY – With more than 4,000 runners already registered for the 31st annual Wineglass Marathon presented by Arnot Health Human Motion Institute, race organizers are excited to welcome this year’s featured guest.
At this year’s Wineglass Marathon presented by Arnot Health Human Motion Institute , the community will welcome American marathon runner Joan Benoit Samuelson. Following a gold medal victory at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Samuelson rose to international stardom after becoming the first ever women’s Olympic marathon champion. Wineglass Marathon is proud to welcome Joan whose visit is generously sponsored by the Community Foundation of Elmira, Corning and the Finger Lakes, StayWell Health Management and Corning Incorporated.
In addition to her Olympic career, Samuelson has an impressive resume that includes multiple victories and top-five finishes at highly competitive races such as the New York City Marathon, Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon. At both the Chicago and Olympic Marathons, Samuelson holds the record for fastest times for an American woman, a title that has been maintained for nearly three decades.
The public is invited to attend a free community presentation on Thursday, September 27th at 7:30pm at The Corning Museum of Glass auditorium. The event is free but seating is limited.
Community members will also have the unique opportunity to run alongside Joan in the first Wineglass 5K Sponsored by the Community Foundation on Saturday, September 28th. The 5K begins at 8:30am at War Memorial Stadium at Corning East High, finishing at the same location. Cost is $25 per person, race-day registration is available in addition to pre-registration at www.wineglassmarathon.com. The event will close at 1,500 participants.
